I’ve been involved in Calisthenics for over twenty years now (gosh, that makes me feel old). There is, however, one question that I still don’t think I’ve mastered the answer to:

“So what is calisthenics? Oh that’s like with the ribbons and stuff, right?”

I don’t know about you, but I find explaining this crazy and wonderful sport SO difficult to new people. So, I’ve written this blog post to try and help myself, and anyone else, out a little.

If you’re new to this captivating sport that combines dance, gymnastics, and theatrical elements, hi! You’re in for a treat. In this blog post, we’ll take you on a journey into the heart of Calisthenics in Australia, exploring its rich history, what makes it unique, and the exciting elements that make it stand out. Whether you’re a parent looking for an engaging activity for your child or an enthusiast eager to learn more, we’re here to unveil the magic.

The Basics

Australian Calisthenics (simply referred to as “calisthenics” for the rest of this blog, mainly for my own sanity) is a unique performing art that is celebrated for its fusion of dance, gymnastics, and theatre. This dynamic combination creates breathtaking routines that showcase strength, flexibility, grace, and storytelling. Participants, typically girls (although boys and non-binary people also participate!) take centre stage, dressed in beautiful costumes, to deliver mesmerising performances that captivate audiences.

Being a competitive sport there is an element of friendly competition, usually leading up to each individual state’s team championships and solo finals. Solo items have been given a much brighter spotlight in the past few years, however, the team aspect is the primary focus of calisthenics and the most integral part of the sport.

A Glimpse into History

Calisthenics has deep roots in Australia, dating back to the late 19th century. It was initially introduced as a form of physical exercise to promote strength and fitness. It was also mainly a male-dominated sport, with women joining over time! Soon enough, it evolved into a spectacular performing art that gained popularity across the country (look out for a blog post delving more into calisthenics history soon!)

The sport’s evolution has been marked by a commitment to precision, creativity, and storytelling. Calisthenics teams work tirelessly to perfect their routines, which often include a combination of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, gymnastics, singing, marching, acting, and the use of various apparatus.

What Sets Us Apart

Calisthenics stands out in several ways:

  1. Artistic Fusion: Unlike traditional gymnastics or dance, Calisthenics seamlessly combines a wide variety of elements with a theatrical flair. Performers not only display physical prowess but also express emotions, convey stories, and interact with the audience. Each item is a production in itself, telling a story and executing each movement with finesse.
  2. Elaborate Costumes: One of the most visually striking aspects of Calisthenics is the extravagant costumes. These costumes are carefully designed to complement the routines and add a touch of glamour to the performances. While costumes have evolved significantly over the years, an ol’ reliable leotard has never gone out of fashion.
  3. Team-Based: Calisthenics is often performed in teams, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork among participants. The sport offers solo and small group items, but the team aspect is something that is truly unique to the sport, fostering friendship and enhancing participants’ spatial awareness and collaborative skills. It’s not just about individual excellence, but about working together to create captivating routines.
  4. Diverse Items: Calisthenics routines are divided into various “items,” each with its own unique characteristics. These items include Rod Exercises, Clubs, Free Exercises, March, Aesthetics, and fancy items that are performed on a yearly rotation. Let’s dive into these elements a bit further.

Exploring the Different Items

  • Rod: This item incorporates the use of a metal rod and focuses on the display of strength and precision. Thee rod is manipulated using twisting and flashing movements, and is combined with intricate footwork completed in sync with other team members.
  • Clubs: Clubs are similar to juggling clubs or Indian clubs and are twirled and swung with grace and accuracy. They are often considered one of the harder items to complete with correct technique, and are often a favourite or least favourite of a participant. Timing and smoothness is key for club swinging, where the clubs move around the body in 2 dimensional circles, almost hypnotising those who watch.
  • Free Exercises: A combination of strength, flexibility, and balance, free exercises showcase the individual athlete’s abilities. This is the most ‘gymnastic’ item, where participants can demonstrate extreme flexibility and strength. Control of movements to assist in completion and recovery is of utmost importance.
  • March: Marching involves precise footwork, formations, and team coordination. Participants create intricate patterns around the stage while stepping in coordination with their team. Marching teaches strong deportment, which is an integral part of every calisthenics item.
  • Aesthetics: Aesthetics items focus on graceful, ballet-inspired movements that emphasise beauty and style. For those who have seen a ballet before, this mimics the corps de ballet, as dancers float around the stage.
  • Character/Fancy Items: These items are often themed routines that tell a story, showcasing creativity and narrative skills. There are a variety of fancy items, and can include singing, acting, various technical skills, and a variety of dance. This is often the ‘fun’ item of the year. Much like a musical theatre item, it is often a production that leaves audiences wowed.

With a wealth of items to explore, Calisthenics offers a diverse range of opportunities for young performers to find their niche and shine. Each item has its own special strength and every student has their favourite (mine is clubs!).
